Returning to the Ice
Volunteering at the Learn to Skate and Learn to Play programs has been one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life. Every time I step onto the ice, I’m reminded of my own beginnings, how I once stood as a beginner, wobbling through Learn to Skate classes, just like the kids I now teach. It’s incredibly rewarding to transition from being a student to a mentor, and it fills me with pride to be part of the same program that helped me fall in love with skating and hockey.
Challenges and Rewards
Teaching kids how to skate is one of the most challenging yet rewarding tasks I've ever taken on. There’s something incredibly special about watching a child’s initial uncertainty transform into confidence. It’s not just about the technical aspects of skating; it’s about guiding them through the process of learning, helping them understand that falling is part of the journey, and encouraging them to keep going. Every time a child successfully glides across the ice for the first time, or picks themselves up after a fall, it’s a reminder of the resilience and determination that these young skaters are developing, traits that will serve them well beyond the rink.
Giving Back
What makes this experience even more meaningful is that I’m giving back to the very community that sparked my own love for hockey. The same community that supported me as I developed not only as a player but also as a person. Volunteering here feels like a way of saying thank you, to the coaches, mentors, and fellow skaters who inspired and encouraged me. Now, I get to be a part of that journey for the next generation, sharing the lessons I’ve learned and the passion that has driven me all these years. It’s not just about teaching skating techniques; it’s about passing on a legacy of support, camaraderie, and love for the game.
Diversity
One of the most enjoyable aspects of volunteering is running drills with the Learn to Play program. There’s a certain energy on the ice when kids are eager to learn and improve their skills. Whether we’re working on basic puck handling or more advanced maneuvers, the enthusiasm is contagious. The kids come from all ages and backgrounds, each bringing their unique energy and perspective, making every session different and exciting. Seeing their progress, from the first tentative steps to confidently participating in drills, is incredibly rewarding. It’s a reminder of why I fell in love with hockey in the first place, the fun, the challenge, and the thrill of improvement.
Impact and Memories
I’ve been volunteering for a few years now, and each year brings new memories and challenges. The one constant feeling I get is the sense of fulfillment from knowing that I’m helping these kids develop skills that will stay with them for life. Just like the ones I learned many years ago, these skills go beyond the ice, they’re about building confidence, resilience, and a sense of community. Volunteering at Learn to Skate and Learn to Play isn’t just about teaching, t’s about contributing to a legacy of passion, growth, and love for a sport that has given me so much. Each time on the ice with these kids is a reminder of the joy that comes from giving back and a reflection of the incredible journey that has shaped my passion for the sport.
